Head in Alaska (Body in Essex), 2019
As part of the Arts Territory Exchange I was paired with Katie Ione Craney, who is based in Alaska. After exchanging images I started working on an imagined landscape, having never been to Alaska and only having Katie’s images as reference. These are the results of my experiments, which come in a set of 8 postcards, following on from the idea of the postal exchange we undertook as well as imagined travel.
Katie’s work spoke to me of loss - of the ice, of cultures, industries, arts funding - a tale of memory and mourning. This loss became symbolised in two hemlock trees Katie had to cut down on her land which recurrs in several images.
